Today the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) issued a long-contested air quality permit for the planned Weymouth Compressor Station. Mothers Out Front, in alliance with Fore River Residents Against the Compressor Station (FRRACS) and other local groups, call on Governor Charlie Baker to finally take a stand and stop any further permitting on this project.
“We are outraged by Commissioner Suuberg’s irresponsible decision. Today’s news clearly illustrates the DEP’s willingness to ignore both scientifically significant evidence and the concerns of community members who will have to live with this compressor station and its effects, should it be built, for the rest of their lives,” said Susan Lees, a volunteer leader with Mothers Out Front.
“Permitting this dangerous and toxic facility next to neighborhoods where residents raise families, send their children to school and build communities is deeply negligent. This project, if fully approved, will only compound existing pollution in the Fore River Basin, causing even more harm to residents’ health. Governor Baker must show that he has the backbone to stand up to large energy corporations and intervene in this broken permitting process.”
Mothers Out Front continues to support FRRACS in opposing this dangerous compressor station. An independent investigation must be opened into the DEP’s flawed permitting process, and further infrastructure development must halt until new policies are implemented to protect people living in highly polluted areas.

More about Mothers Out Front:
Mothers Out Front Massachusetts is a grassroots organization of mothers and others working with more than 9,800 volunteers across the Commonwealth to create a livable climate for all children.
Mothers Out Front is founded on the conviction that there is no more powerful force for change than women mobilizing to protect their children and communities. Faced with the oncoming threat of devastating climate change along with a range of present-day, damaging impacts stemming from fossil fuel extraction and use, we are building a diverse, national movement of mothers pushing for a swift transition from dirty to clean energy. Why mothers? Because mothers are highly-credible, involved and influential forces in their communities who will do what it takes to preserve an opportunity-filled future for their children.
