Protest #GovernorGas in Newton
For over a month now, Mothers Out Front and our allies have taken to social media to call out MA Governor Baker as #GovernorGas while his Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recklessly granted an air quality permit to the dangerous Weymouth Compressor Station. This compressor station would devastate the health of citizens in the already over-polluted Fore River Basin, and impact climate change by turning Massachusetts into a superhighway for fracked gas. That fracked gas is mostly for export and profit, not our residents' use, so why should we deal with the pollution? Governor Baker has the power to stop this project through his state regulatory agencies like the DEP, but he refuses.
Now, on June 19th, he is set to receive the The Paul G. Keough Award for Government Leadership from the Environmental Business Council New England, whose sponsors include gas profiteers National Grid and Eversource, "in Recognition of Outstanding Leadership in the Development and Support of Comprehensive Clean Renewable Energy Programs, Including Hydropower and Offshore Wind, and for the Aggressive Development of Climate Programs for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts."
Mothers Out Front says "No climate awards for #GovernorGas!" Wear your Mothers out Front shirt and join us in front of the Marriott with your most creative signs (we will have some ready for you if you can't make your own). Our allies will be there with us to meet the attendees of this sham awards dinner and give them and the media a clear message: Governor Baker does not deserve this award and will not until he denies the permit for the Weymouth compressor station and takes real steps to transition MA off fracked gas.
