Newton: Home Rule Petition

On June 23rd at 7pm, the Public Facilities Committee will have a public hearing on the Home Rule Petition. Please attend the meeting to show your support (and RSVP so we know you are planning to attend). If you would like to speak, please email Rachel and Cindy (you will receive this email address when you RSVP) so can coordinate Mothers Out Front participation. There will be a 2 minute limit for each individual.

The city’s legal department has completed draft language for an Electrification Ordinance and the associated Home Rule Petition. New and substantially renovated  buildings (greater than 50% of floor area affected) will be required to use electricity for heating and cooling systems and hot water appliances. Electrification of cooking is not required in these documents. The three other municipalities which have passed a Home Rule Petition have also exempted gas cooking.
