Kathleen Scanlon - in support of Community Choice Aggregation in Brookline
TMM Precinct 3, gave on Tuesday night (November 17th) in support of Warrant Articles 13 and 14, which start the process of Community Choice Aggregation in Brookline.
My name is Kathleen Scanlon - TMM precinct 3.
I am a mother of 3, an architect, and a Brookline resident for 10 years. I am also the Brookline coordinator for Mothers Out Front. Mothers Out Front, nationally, is a group of mothers and other caregivers who can no longer be silent about the very real danger that climate change poses to our children and their future. The larger goal is to transition society away from fossil fuels to clean energy. We are building a movement to use our collective voice to convince elected officials and business leaders to push for this transition. We do this out of love for our children, and our commitment to protect theirs and future generations. Locally, we are working to help our Brookline community diminish our reliance on fossil fuels through various approaches. These include our endorsement of Warrant articles 13 and 14.
These warrant articles make it possible for local renewables to bring us clean electricity regionally. When Brookline makes it a goal to purchase even more local, renewable resources, additional renewable infrastructure investments beyond those required by the minimum state mandate are created. A big enough town like Brookline, and importantly, a growing network of towns working with local suppliers could create impactful demand for this additional infrastructure and other renewable electricity projects. Mothers Out Front supports these warrant articles because:
- This is the most impactful action we can take for relatively little time and commitment of town resources.
- It contributes to a network of towns whose demand will increase regional, renewable electricity projects.
- It will keep up the political and economic pressure to lessen the political grip of the fossil fuel industry.
- Most of all - It will keep fossil fuels in the ground.
As mothers and caregivers, our primary concern is that our children have a safe, healthy environment today, and a livable climate in the future, something our generation was able to take for granted. Personally, I want my children to know our generation did all it could to fight against climate change. These warrant articles are important because they provide important guidance. This resolution tells the Board of Selectmen that this is the direction we want them to take us.
There is much work to be done to keep fossil fuels in the ground and action is desperately needed. This choice is the right choice for the health and wellbeing of all of us in Brookline. In one single action by Town Meeting and the Selectmen, we will massively cut our climate change impacts from our electricity usage - reducing our carbon emissions by 8% of the town’s overall emissions. There is no other action we can take that can result in carbon emission reductions of this magnitude I hope you will join Mothers Out Front and vote yes on warrant articles 13 & 14.
