Mothers Out Front Endorses Bill to Expand Absentee Voting During the Pandemic
Mothers Out Front has been focused on three bills—Carbon Pricing (H.1940), the FUTURE Act (H.2849/S.1940), and Environmental Justice or EJ (H.4264), but the current situation has led the MALT to also endorse H.4737 (originally known as H.D.5075) (text here and cosponsors here). This bill would expand access to absentee mail-in ballots by mailing them to all citizens on the voter registration rolls. Other measures to increase the safety of both poll workers and voters are also included.
While there are geniune differences of opinion about best practices, over 100 citizen activist groups have endorsed this bill, including Common Cause, the League of Women Voters, and others representing communities of color. As Pam Wilmot of Common Cause says, “We support this bill because it is based on evidence and best practices from other states. It is comprehensive, and includes reforms that consider the needs of voters, but also of local elections officials.” This will be a critically important election for everything Mothers Out Front is working for. H.4737 addresses crucial issues that must be resolved quickly in order to make sure all who are eligible to vote here in Massachusetts have the opportunity to do so equitably and safely!
