Eversource Hearing on Rate Hikes
On November 8, 2019, Eversource filed a rate review request with the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities (DPU) to increase natural gas delivery rates. This rate increase proposal will affect all residents in Worcester who heat their homes with natural gas. The public has an opportunity to provide comments on the proposed increase in what consumers will have to pay.
Please, consider coming to this hearing to let Eversource know that we oppose any rate increases and any new natural gas infrastructure that will bring more dirty gas into our homes, instead of working to transition our communities off of fossil fuel.
The public hearing will take place:
Date: Tuesday, February 25th
Location: North High School,140 Harrington Way
Time: 7 pm
According to the latest DPU Gas Leaks summary report released by Gas Leak Allies, 15,000 gas leaks were repaired state-wide by utility companies. We are thankful to utility workers who work hard to repair these gas leaks. However, as 15,000 old gas leaks were repaired, 16,000 new gas leaks have appeared.
Rate payers are not only paying for dirty gas they are not using, they are now being asked to pay more with proposed rate hikes. Additionally, our old pipes leak methane, a greenhouse gas 84 more time potent than carbon dioxide. In Worcester alone, there are 823 unrepaired gas leaks. Eversource is ALSO proposing a new pipeline expansion project through Westborough & Southborough (the town of Westborough is currently opposing this pipeline) that will feed more dirty gas to Worcester and surrounding towns. This is an opportunity for Worcester residents to also express their opposition against the proposed expanded pipeline.
Natural gas has detrimental effects on our climate, the environment and health. The proposed rate hikes also hurt families and residents in Worcester who will have to pay more in heating costs.
We hope to get as many Worcester residents express opposition to the proposed rate hike and any new fossil fuel infrastructure.
