Do you want to protect your child from the harmful physical and mental effects of air pollution?
Mothers Out Front East Boston can help.
Inhaling toxins generated by airports and roadway congestion can have major effects on the health and development of East Boston kids. Children in heavily polluted areas of East Boston are:
- 3-4 times more likely to experience symptoms of asthma than children in other neighborhoods.
- 2x as likely to experience COPD (chronic obtrusive pulmonary disease).
-
more likely to experience negative impacts on development and school performance.
This will only get worse with future airport expansion plans.
Our community is unfairly affected by pollution like so many other Environmental Justice communities in America;
- 88% of Latinos live in areas that do not meet federal EPA air quality standards. Hispanic children are twice as likely to die from asthma, as compared to non-Hispanic whites.
-
African American children are 4.4 times more likely to be hospitalized for asthma, and 7.1 times more likely to die from asthma than white children.
Mothers Out Front East Boston is tackling these issues head on with real solutions. HEPA filters - which remove 75-82% of ultrafine particulate pollution from the air within minutes - are already being installed in all East Boston schools, some community centers, and 20 homes for a pilot study. The end goal is providing every single home with a HEPA filter.
