Here's what we're working on in Waltham!
Together, we’re working to change the narrative on natural gas and to push the city toward renewable energy!
1) Gas Leaks In Waltham
Did you know???
Current law allows gas companies to charge customers for leaked gas! In other words, WE are paying for the leaked gas on our bills!
Leaked gas is mostly methane which is 86 times more powerful a greenhouse gas than the carbon dioxide that results from burning it.
There are over 160 gas leaks in Waltham and some have been leaking for over 20 years!
Luckily, Waltham is part of a pilot program to identify and fix the environmentally significant leaks! These large leaks, also known as super emitters, make up 7% of leaks, but leak 50% of the methane! The Gas Leak Allies (including Mothers Out Front) and the gas utility companies are conducting this study in several towns, including Waltham, to test the best methods for finding and fixing these big leaks. Fixing the biggest leaks saves our environment and our dollars! Our team is supporting this effort. Come find out more about the findings of the study at our Summit on October 3rd at MIT - email us to find out more!
Additionally, our work around gas leaks has lead to some great relationships with our city officials. We have made lots of allies in the City Council who are helping us change the story about natural gas and renewable energy at the local level.
2) Making Waltham a Green Community
Currently, all of Waltham’s neighboring towns and cities are Green Communities, but Waltham is not. A Green Communities designation qualifies cities and towns for grants that finance energy efficiency and renewable energy projects at the local level. Waltham already meets several of the requirements to become a Green Community, however, critical work is being done now to meet the application deadline this November. Missing this deadline would require us to wait another entire year to apply, which would mean we would not qualify for another year’s worth of grant money. We are working with WECAN (Waltham Energy and Climate Action Now!) and our allies in City Council to help Waltham get the Green Community designation this year.
3) Waltham High School - Adding Renewables
Waltham is currently planning to build a new, state of the art high school. Mothers Out Front wants this building plan to be forward thinking and to add new renewable energy to our city! Other towns have included renewables in their high school plans and so should we! We are attending public hearings with the School Building Committee to push this forward, but we need your help! Join us help shape this idea!
Come join us to help make Waltham the strongest community it can be!
